The Myth

The Kivihaldjad are Estonian nature spirits believed to inhabit or dwell upon sacred offering stones. These stones were regarded as places where supernatural beings could be present, and the Kivihaldjad were specifically associated with them.

Water that collected on the surface of an offering stone was considered sacred and was believed to possess healing powers. The water could therefore be gathered and used for its supposed curative properties, linking the Kivihaldjad closely with both the sacred stone and the healing power attributed to it.
