The Myth

Dobrochoczy is a supernatural guardian of the forest, responsible for protecting the plants that grow beneath its trees. Unlike Leshy, who rules over forest animals, Dobrochoczy watches over the woodland’s vegetation and ensures that its natural growth remains protected. He is generally more peaceful and less capricious than other forest spirits, although he remains distrustful of people who enter his domain. His appearance is closely connected to the trees themselves, and he most often takes the form of a tree whose height changes to match the surrounding vegetation. In this form, he can observe everything that happens in the forest without being easily distinguished from the woodland around him.

Dobrochoczy can also appear as a forest rider, a whirlwind, or, more rarely, an animal. He possesses the ability to imitate the sounds of the forest, including echoes, allowing him to remain elusive among the trees. Although he treats visitors with suspicion, he is regarded as a fair judge who protects the innocent and punishes wrongdoing. He cares for those who have been wronged and shows mercy to people who become lost in the forest, often guiding them safely out of the woodland or moving them to a safer place.

Those who act dishonestly, however, face his merciless judgment. Dobrochoczy punishes the guilty with severe illnesses and sometimes painful death, but his punishments affect only the wrongdoer rather than their family. People may seek his favour by leaving bread and salt wrapped in clean linen in the forest. Such offerings can also serve as a plea for his help in finding someone who has become lost. To those who respect fairness and seek protection, Dobrochoczy can be a benevolent guide, but those who commit injustices risk suffering the consequences of his supernatural judgment.
