The Myth

The Caquesseitão is a bizarre flying creature said to inhabit the island of Sumatra. It has a body about the size of a large duck and is covered in black coloration, with a hard shell protecting its back. A row of long spines runs along its backbone, each roughly the length of a quill pen. Its wings resemble those of a bat, while its neck is long and snake-like. On its forehead grows a sharp claw resembling a rooster’s spur, and its exceptionally long tail is patterned in green and black, like the tails of lizards.

The Caquesseitão hunts among the treetops, where it leaps and flies after howler monkeys and other animals. It feeds on the creatures it catches in the upper branches of the forest, using its wings and unusual body to pursue prey through the canopy. Its combination of a shell, spines, bat-like wings, serpentine neck, and hooked forehead makes it a strange and formidable predator of the tropical woodland.
