The Myth
Spor, also known as Sporysz, is a supernatural personification of fertility, abundance, and prosperity in Slavic mythology. It represents the power behind successful growth, plentiful harvests, and the multiplication of wealth. In Belarusian tradition, Spor was sometimes personified as a man with white, curly hair.
In the Lublin region of Poland, Spor was described in animal forms, including a hamster or a rat carrying a small pouch. Other accounts portrayed it as a snake, dog, cat, or frog. These varied forms reflect its association with abundance and the natural forces that ensure prosperity.
Spor was also linked to ergot, a parasitic fungus that grows on grain and was locally known as the “mother of the grain.” Its presence could be interpreted as an omen of a plentiful harvest. The name Spor derives from Slavic words meaning “abundant,” “plentiful,” or “to increase,” reflecting the spirit’s role as a bringer of fertility and good fortune.
