The Myth
Sacháyoj is an ancient supernatural being who protects the forests of northwestern Argentina. He appears as an aged figure covered from head to toe in extremely long, white hair, giving him a wild and otherworldly appearance. In some depictions, he carries a long cane in one hand as he wanders through the woodland. His strange appearance sets him apart from ordinary humans, marking him as a powerful guardian of the natural world.
As Lord of the Forest, Sacháyoj watches over the trees and protects the woodland from unnecessary destruction. Those who cut down trees without good reason risk provoking his supernatural punishment. When someone fells a tree needlessly, Sacháyoj can make the tree disappear forever, ensuring that it can never be recovered. Through this power, he warns people against wasteful destruction and defends the forest against those who fail to respect its natural riches.
