The Myth
Vilisuu is a frightening monster in Estonian folklore that stalks naughty children who wander outside at night. It serves as a threatening figure in traditional warnings, used by parents to discourage children from leaving the safety of their homes after dark.
Estonian parents warned disobedient children with the words: “Ära mine õue, vilisuu tuleb!” meaning, “Don’t go out into the yard, Vilisuu is coming!” The warning presents Vilisuu as a lurking danger waiting for children who venture outside when they should be indoors.
The available account does not describe Vilisuu’s physical appearance or explain what happens to children who encounter it. Its role is primarily that of a night-time bogeyman, whose feared arrival encourages children to obey their parents and remain safely inside.
Vilisuu illustrates how Estonian folklore used frightening supernatural figures to establish boundaries around children’s behaviour. By associating nighttime wandering with the threat of a monster, the tradition transformed a parental warning into a vivid supernatural danger.
