The Myth
The Arquetu is a supernatural figure in Cantabrian mythology who appears as an old man bearing a drawing of a green cross and seven keys on his forehead. He is associated with money, personal fortune, and the consequences of financial irresponsibility.
The Arquetu lends money to people who have foolishly squandered their wealth. His assistance offers them an opportunity to recover from their financial difficulties, but it comes with a strict condition: they must not repeat their wasteful behaviour. His generosity is therefore limited, intended for those who have exhausted their fortunes through careless spending rather than as an unconditional source of wealth.
If someone wastes their fortune again after receiving his help, the Arquetu punishes them with a curse of eternal poverty. His punishment transforms a repeated failure to manage money into a permanent loss of prosperity, leaving the offender unable to escape their misfortune.
The Arquetu represents the consequences of financial recklessness in Cantabrian folklore. Although he offers a second chance to those who have squandered their wealth, his assistance demands a change in behaviour. His seven keys and green cross distinguish his unusual appearance, while his power over money and poverty makes him a supernatural enforcer of financial responsibility.
