The Myth

The Geykalek is a harmful forest spirit described as a shaggy, fur-covered man with a beard, glowing eyes, and immense supernatural strength. It lurks among the trees and can move through the forest without being seen. Its presence is often announced by strange laughter or a disembodied voice echoing through the woods. The spirit delights in tormenting people who enter its territory, especially woodcutters, berry pickers, and travellers passing through the forest.

The Geykalek is a mischievous and dangerous trickster. It may move fallen trees or shift logs so that woodcutters find their carts blocked, then laugh at their confusion. Women gathering blueberries have been slapped so violently on the back of the head that they fall to the ground, despite seeing no attacker. Travellers may hear a voice calling out from the trees, mocking them or answering their shouts. If someone challenges the spirit by shouting louder than it, the Geykalek may suddenly throw them to the ground, crush them beneath an invisible weight, or smash them against the earth with such force that they die.

The spirit can also torment people by pressing down on them like an unbearable, invisible burden. In some encounters, it appears as a huge man who makes sounds resembling a strong wind. Despite its malicious nature, the Geykalek is sometimes associated with the protection of the forest. It is said to feed on insect larvae, eggs, small birds, mice, frogs, and fish, and it may ask travellers for water in exchange for directing them to a forest spring. Some tales claim that where the Geykalek settles, robbers dare not operate and bandits eventually abandon the area. Nevertheless, anyone who enters its woodland domain risks becoming the target of its cruel tricks and supernatural strength.
