The Myth
The Yuanat is a strange serpent-like creature reported from the island of Hispaniola or Cuba. It is said to inhabit trees, the land, and the water, making it a creature of all three environments. About the size of a rabbit, it has a frightening appearance, with a lizard-like tail, four weak bird-like legs, and long claws on each toe. Its forelegs are longer than its hindlegs, its teeth are sharp, and a fin-like spine runs along its back. Beneath its throat hangs a colourful flap of skin extending down to its belly, displaying so many different hues that no single colour appears dominant. Despite its unusual body, the Yuanat swims well and is entirely mute.
Despite its fearsome appearance, the Yuanat is considered harmless and its flesh is highly prized, reportedly tasting even better than rabbit. The island’s inhabitants were said to keep one on a leash for ten or twelve days before slaughtering it, as the creature never attempted to attack or injure them. However, its meat carries a particular danger: according to the account, eating Yuanat can cause the pox to return with full force in people who have previously suffered from the disease.
