Hémännekes: The Haunting Light Bearers of Twente
In the folklore of Overijssel, Twente (Netherlands), the Hémännekes (or Heemanneke) are mysterious little men who haunt lonely places near pools, swamps, and streams.
The Call of the Hémännekes
These eerie beings are always seen holding small lights in their hands as they roam the desolate landscapes. They have a peculiar habit of constantly calling out, “Hé, hé!”—a sound that echoes through the night, luring unsuspecting travelers.
If an unfortunate soul answers their call, one of the Hémännekes will leap onto their back. Once perched there, the tiny creature grows impossibly heavy, pressing down on its victim. As the traveler struggles under its crushing weight, the Hémänneke stares into their eyes with a burning, glowing gaze.
The Only Protection
According to legend, the only way to escape their torment is to carry a knife with a breadcrumb still attached to it. Those who do are mysteriously spared.
Hémännekes Beyond Twente
Similar beings are also known to appear in Germany and Austria, where they are feared as mischievous or malevolent spirits lurking in the wilderness.
The Hémännekes are yet another example of how European folklore is filled with phantom tricksters that test human wit and endurance, often in the most unsettling ways.
